The Waterloo recycling station has been replaced with a much larger station in Seaview. Deputy mayor David Bassett unveiled the new facility last Thursday.
Last year, the city council looked at closing both Waterloo and Naenae recycling bins after complaints from neighbours.
The council decided to retain the Naenae station but Bassett said it had little choice but to close Waterloo.
As well as complaints from nearby residents about doors banging and glass being broken, material for recycling was being set on fire.
It was also situated on a corner and posed an accident risk.
The new station is run by Waste Management at their Seaview Road depot.
Bassett said its site is ideal as it can be used by central Hutt and Eastbourne residents. The conucil is “very, very keen’ to support recycling and he said the new station is an asset for the city.
